Who Will You Show Up As?

A few years ago, a friend from a coaching group I’m in sent a message to a group chat that we’re all on. He was in NY for Thanksgiving and wanted to know if anyone wanted to run an unsupported marathon (this just means on your own and not part of an official race) at 8am on the Friday after Thanksgiving through the streets of New York City.

That’s right. When many people are sleeping in, having over eaten and having drank too much the day before, he was running a marathon.

Just for fun.

It blew me away that someone operated like that. That he operated in a manner so opposite of what’s traditional or expected.

For me, he showed up as a leader, an example of unwavering commitment, and a total badass.

I’d just run a marathon a few days earlier, but if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t have joined him if I hadn’t just run one. I was more interested in overindulging and sleeping in.

As you’re thinking about your 2024, ask yourself who’ll you’ll show up as as a leader, a partner, an athlete, a learner, a parent, a friend, and beyond.

Will you do what most people do, or will you show up, in whatever areas you choose to focus on, as the equivalent of someone who’d run a marathon the day after Thanksgiving? As someone so committed and focused that you make other really committed and focused people cower in your presence?

Who will you show up as in 2024? The choice is yours.
