THE LONELIEST WHALE
Recently, I read an article entitled, The Loneliest Whale. It was about a whale, discovered in 1992, who, unlike other whales, lives alone, travels alone, has no family, no group, and has never had a companion.
Just like other whales, she sings songs, whistles, and makes clicks (all of these are known as whale vocalizations), but no other whales respond.
This is because of a uniqueness in her voice: other whales communicate in the range of 12 to 25 hertz. Her call resonates at 52 hertz, and is too high for other whales to hear.
Here’s a quote from the piece.
“And so her song goes unheard. Her calls fade into the depths, unanswered, undivided. But she doesn’t give up. Despite the silence, despite the loneliness, she sings on. Perhaps because hope is stronger than despair. Perhaps because she simply cannot do otherwise.”
Remember that line: hope is stronger than despair.
Whether you use it to fuel you when a dream of yours seems impossible to attain, or when it seems it’s not getting any traction at all. Or whether you lean on that line when the world around you seems to be caving in.
Hope is stronger than despair.
And unlike the loneliest whale, who may never be heard, you will.
Maybe not today or tomorrow, but you will.
Keep showing up. Keep working hard. Keep singing.
