Ten Nos In a Row
I watched a video from business guru, Myron Golden, recently. In it, he described a game he created called, āTen Nos in a Row.ā
The object of the game is simple. Golden would pitch people on the product he was selling with the sole purpose of getting them to say, āNo.ā
If at some point in the process of trying to get ten nos in a row, Golden were to get a āYesā he would start over.
Goldenās theory was that one of the reasons people donāt achieve their full potential is because theyāre afraid of people saying no to them. So Golden flipped the script entirely. He sought out no. He got comfortable with no. He built up his resistance to hearing no.
This resonated deeply. Not just for the people I coach, but for myself as well.
So hereās a challenge.
Right now, thereās something you want or need that likely, you donāt have a great chance of getting. Maybe itās more air time with your boss. Maybe itās a promotion. Maybe itās to bring on a partner. Maybe itās something personal like selling your house and moving your family 1,000 miles away. I donāt know what yours is, but you do.
So ask for it. With the intention of getting a no. Now, donāt ask for it in a way that will ensure you get a no.
Donāt say, āHey, idiot. Give me a promotion or Iāll fight you.ā
But ask for the thing that you think you have very little chance of getting. Get a no. See how it feels.
Iām going to join you on this. Letās get better at dealing with resistance together.
And if you do it, send me an email to tell me how it felt.
